The Passion-Driven Classroom

Today's tweet comes from the techlearning twitter page about summer reading in the "passion-driven classroom." The writer of the article tweeted does not necessarily mention anything in particular about technology, but what struck me was this quote:

"For me, with the internet, reading has become a conversation.  I love to read, discuss, and write."

This makes me wonder about how my students, who have never lived without technology or the internet, view reading. As an English teacher it is so important to me to work with my students and know how they view reading and how to incorporate the web into reading time. Reflecting on what we have learned throughout this course and over the summer, there are endless educational tools that will allow me to do so - reading discussions can be held through blogs or Edmodo, which my mentor teacher currently doing with her seniors this year. Posters can be created for the movie version of students' books through Glogster, or have them annotate with markup.io. Students can search for books online and review the book on amazon to make their voice heard. This is totally different than I looked at reading when I was growing up, and as an educator I need to look beyond my definitions of reading to incorporate a more internet/technology friendly classroom and use the internet as means of discussion for the books we read.
